3 Black Women Podcasts To Get You Through Quarantine

It’s going on week two of social distancing and quarantine during the coronavirus pandemic, and besides the occasional trip to Target the allure of being at home is starting to wear thin. If you’re like me and find yourself drowning in the silence of your own apartment/home/space and don’t have enough contacts to Facetime, here are three podcasts by black women to fill the void.

1. The Secret Lives of Black Women
I got into this podcast hosted by Charla Lauriston and Lauren Domino through their first episode of season three with Teen Vogue’s Editor-In-Chief Lindsay Peoples Wagner. If you do anything today, go listen to that interview! So many gems!

2. hey, girl.
I’ve been listening to Alex Elle’s soothing voice for over a year now. The hey, girl. podcast if one of my favorites to put on early in the morning when I’m getting ready. There’s always a little nugget of advice or an aha moment with each episode, whether you relate to the topic or not.

3. Therapy For Black Girls
I have to mention this podcast ran by licensed psychologist Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, especially in today’s climate of uncertainty and anxiety. Nothing beats having a licensed mental health professional who knows you personally, but if you don’t have access to or can’t afford therapy then this podcast can at least point you in the right direction.

What Can I say, Pink Is My Color

So recently purchased a few pieces from the new ColourPop Sailor Moon Collection when it restocked at Ulta last week and I love it! The collection is currently sold out, but it could potentially pop back up in stores or online after a later date. Or, at least I hope so I can pick up a few more products!

For this look, I used the shades “Miracle Romance” and “Luna” across my eyelids from the Pretty Guardian Pressed Powder Palette and dusted From The Moon Pressed Powder Blush across my cheeks.

What do you think? Should I break down my makeup application process in a future post? Let a girl know!

New Hair Alert: Lion Tail Braids

I’m really not sure what to call this new hair style I just got. The first person I saw with the look was “Next In Fashion’s” Claire Davis (@nothanksm8) with her natural hair in thin twists and I knew I had to do the same. One popular model and influencer Hannah Mussette (@mussette) called them lion tail braids on Instagram, but they’re simply jumbo box braids or twists with leave out.

Got bored and decided to do lion tails

Though my version ended up more like Hannahs, ditching the marley hair and opting instead for sleek kanekalon braiding hair to get the vibrant highlighter pink I wanted. I’ve been seeing versions of this trend with celebs like Amandla Steinberg (@amandlasponsored) since at least 2018. I wonder what other forms this look will take and if it’ll eventually get an official name. Only time will tell, but I can say for sure that it’s a vibe!

You ever felt like you were on the cusp of something new? Something big? Something fun? As we finish up the first half of the year this month, I can’t help but be optimistic for the rest of the 2018. Maybe it’s the slew of vacations I have planned or maybe I’m just manifesting the change I want to see? Whatever it is, it’s definitely coming threw in my wardrobe choices. I seriously can’t tell you the last time I bought an ankle length dress, but this one from Urban Outfitters was so darling I couldn’t pass it up—especially since it was on sale. Actually everything I’m wearing was off the sales rack.

Word of advice: Never sleep on the sale section, especially in between seasons.

New Job, New Me

IMG_3040edit

This year has been amazing. Amid all the political drama and racial tensions, I’ve personally been winning lately. Maybe it’s turning 25 at the end of last year, but I’ve finally started making things happen for myself. It’s all been thanks to God. I put in the work and he delivers on his promises.

I’ve been trying to live what I preach. I’m the encouraging friend, the nurturing friend, the friend that encourages everyone around me to in the words of Oprah, “Live your best life!” But, I wasn’t practicing what I preached, until this year. I finally decided I was going to apply to the jobs I wanted, not just the jobs that I could do. I decided I was going to apply to this Assistant Editor position for a children’s magazine that I was barely qualified for. I didn’t even get a call back, but then less than a month later I came across the same position for a hair magazine more suited to my interests.

I applied, got an interview, then another interview, then a temporary freelance position for a few weeks, before finally starting in a permanent position as an Assistant Editor in April. That happened because I decided to finally start going after what I wanted. Every internship, blog or magazine I ever wrote for prepared me for the job I have today.

This “Just do it!” mentality has benefited me positively in other areas of my life, and yes sometimes things still don’t work out the way I want them too. But, I think it’s better to start living life without regrets, than to have a bunch of “shoulda, coulda, wouldas” in the future.

Follow me on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook at DxLynnx for more life stuff.

XOXO

OOTW: Lady In The Red Dress

I’ve finally gotten around to editing these photos! I’ve been so excited to share these with who ever actually looks at this blog. Besides being crazy busy with a new Assistant Editor job at Associated Publications and just running around doing odd paying tasks for the family, I’ve been exhausted. It’s late and I need to get to bed soon, but before i go I want you guys to take a glimpse at these lovely shots my friend Tatiana, from the blog B.L.I.S.S. For Singles,  took of me at the Garfield Park Conservatory. Blooper shots are mixed in. Enjoy!!
